WE’RE WELCOMED BY THE EVADC

L1005660

Our next stop was Silver Springs, Maryland, just outside DC. It was hard to believe we were so close to the Capitol, and we kept peeking at the top of the trees, expecting to see the Washington monument poking out. But our destination tonight was not the White House. It was a restaurant called Fajita Coast, where we were invited to a dinner being hosted by the Electric Vehicle Association, a Washington EV club. The fact that electric vehicle clubs exist in the first place is testimony to how far EVs need to come. It means they’re still niche. When something becomes ubiquitous there’s no longer any reason for a club. The entire world is the club. This is why there is no Cordless Telephone Association of Greater Miami, or Knights of the Crewneck Sweater. And while EVs may not be everywhere yet, they will be soon. Anytime you can get something at a Best Buy, ubiquity is on the way. So it’s conceivable that one day there will be no Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington, D.C. But we have to admit that for now, we’re damn glad there is. For one thing, it’s run by two of the best guys you’ll ever meet, President Dave Goldstein and Vice President Charlie Garlow, proponents of EVs long before they became chic. For another, as we witnessed over dinner, the club is a catalyst for the exchange of EV ideas, an open-source skunk works where members compare notes on the latest vehicles they’ve built or modifications they’ve made. And of course the club is constantly working to increase awareness of EVs and help pave the way for their adoption by society en masse. Charlie picked up the entire tab for dinner, and afterward we followed him to his home, where he let Brian and I crash in the basement. Charlie rocks. Unless you generate excessive air pollution, in which case he’s your worst nightmare–by day Charlie is an attorney for the Environmental Protection Agency, Air Enforcement Division. Anyway, as our heads hit the pillow we were filled with excitement, and more than a little uncertainty. With the Capitol shut down over the weekend, we’d be relegated to working whatever contacts we could for the next couple days, and strategizing for Monday and Tuesday. What if we can’t get a bike to Barack? What if we can? What if…

What We're Doing

Our plan is to retrace the route of the automotive CEOs who went to Washington DC asking for government loans. But instead of looking for aid, we'd like to present President Obama with a homegrown solution to the transportation crisis. And instead of flying in a corporate jet, we're riding Brammo Enertia powercycles. We're just a couple of guys who work for Brammo, but we want to show that there's a better way to get from Point A to Point B. And we want to have a little fun while we're doing it. So join us as we surf from plug to plug in a quest to meet Obama, fueled by nothing more than electricity and the kindness of everyday Americans.
