I never shut up. Brian, on the other hand, is pretty soft spoken. Which means that when he says something, it usually has substance. And his summation of how we finally gave Barack Obama an electric motorcycle is as humble and genuine as he is: “It isn’t a fairytale ending, but it’s real, and in the end, maybe that’s better.” Brian uttered those words shortly after we locked Barack’s bike to a pole at an undisclosed location in the Greater Washington DC area, then mailed the keys to the lock and bike, along with a letter and directions, to the President himself. So it would be this street corner that was the final destination in a journey that had taken us more than 700 miles. A trip the Detroit CEOs made to the tune of $20,000 per person, and we had just completed for $4.67 per guy. I’m not really a math guy, but those numbers alone make the whole thing worthwhile. As for the bike we left behind, who knows what will happen. Maybe it will be impounded, or stolen one piece at a time by thieves. Maybe the Secret Service will come and get it. Maybe nothing will happen. But in the end we tried, and thanks to everyone out there who was pulling for us, a few doors opened. The door to the oval office wasn’t one of them. But if Barack wants a bike, he knows where to find it.

To everyone who followed us and helped us along the way, we send love and thanks. Dave and Brian, out.

As Brian and I watched a dialed, well-dressed Craig Bramscher effortlessly clear White House security and walk through the same type of gate we were nearly shot at, we had to admit that maybe we weren’t White House material. I have stuff on my neck and hands, and after two weeks on the road, Brian looked like he’d just rolled out of a cardboard dwelling situated underneath a highway overpass. Still, as much as we wanted to be on the other side of that gate, we felt more at home on our side. We had ridden the bikes to a spot across the street where we were now sitting astride them, waiting for Craig to emerge. And while he was inside, selling important people on the future of EVs (and hopefully rubbing elbows with someone who could help us get a bike to Obama), we were selling random passersby on the same thing. The bikes attract a lot of attention wherever they go, and we were approached by all kinds of people outside the White House. Clerical workers, construction dudes, an electrician, a beat cop. All of them wanted to know what the bikes were about, where we had been, what we were doing. And as we answered you could see their eyes light up and the wheels start turning in their heads, with the near-universal conclusion: I want one. Eventually Craig came out, trailing a half dozen business leaders, who were genuinely excited about the bikes. There’s a little kid in even the most stern-looking adults, and these electric motorcycles seem to bring that kid bubbling to the surface every time. Once Craig had taken a few of his fellow captains of industry through the finer points of the bikes and bid them farewell, he filled us in on the meeting with Secretary Chu. He didn’t get to speak much (understandable), but when the opportunity presented itself he didn’t pull any punches. While Secretary Chu left no doubt that the government was getting behind EVs on several fronts, outlining various initiatives and incentives planned for the next 7 years, Craig wanted to know what more could be done RIGHT NOW. What could be done to make EVs a viable choice for consumers TODAY. How soon could we have an infrastructure of recharging stations, how deep can the incentives go? These questions won’t be answered for awhile, but the fact that Craig had a chance to pose them–on behalf of his company, on behalf the EV category, and on behalf of people all over the world who participated in our Shockingbarack journey–seemed in an of itself a pretty big deal. But enough about all this policy stuff, we had to know, were we any closer to getting a bike to Barack Obama? Unfortunately, we were not. Brian and I were a little crushed that Secretary Chu didn’t come out of the White House, wheel one of the bikes inside and promise to give it to Obama the next time he ran into him. But, well, he’s the Secretary of Energy. He has a lot on his plate. Besides, we’ve been kicking around another idea, a Plan Q, or Plan X, something you resort to well after you’ve exhausted Plans A, B and C. And it was time to put that plan into action.

Since we arrived in Washington we’d been pounding the pavement and banging on doors all over the capitol, right up to the White House itself, trying not to run afoul of the United States Secret Service or any other government agency in our attempt to get an electric motorcycle to President Obama. But at times it seemed like we had gotten nowhere. At least, that’s what we thought. Then, just when we were starting to reconcile ourselves with the fact that we were nothing more than a couple of ill-prepared, unconnected, seriously disheveled guys on electric motorcycles, we received an amazing piece of news from BRAMMO CEO Craig Bramscher. All the cultural momentum of our journey, all the people following us and rooting for us and contacting lawmakers on our behalf, had landed Craig a last minute invitation to meet with the US Secretary of Energy, Stephen Chu. Obama wouldn’t be there, so we’d still have to figure out how to get him one of the bikes, but this was a big deal for the future of EVs–a chance to influence policy that would pave the way for success in the category. So, yes, Brian and I WERE just a couple of ill-prepared, unconnected, seriously disheveled guys. But unbeknownst to us, we were backed by all of you guys out there–a digital confederation of smart, passionate, net-savvy individuals who wouldn’t take no for an answer. It was you and not us that opened this door, and if that isn’t democracy, what the hell is?

We weren’t sure if the reporter’s story would get picked up, but a few hours later the web seemed to explode with syndicated goodness as AP affiliates nationwide began running the story online. After two weeks of relative anonymity, traveling hundreds of miles on back roads through strange towns large and small, this kind of notoriety was wholly unexpected. Brian and I were floored by the coverage, and we felt totally indebted to all the people out there who helped generate enough buzz to make this happen. Maybe someone would notice now. Maybe that someone would be Obama.

So if the Smithsonian wouldn’t take the bike, maybe the Department of Energy would. We had heard they display energy-related things in their lobby, and the bike seemed to align with Secretary Chu’s thoughts on transportation. When we pulled up we saw security was taken very seriously at the DOE, and that the building itself bears a striking resemblance to a Borg spaceship (”resistance is futile, you will be assimilated.”) Inside we found the building’s lobby home to a display about the Manhattan Project. And it was dimly lit for a place of business. Between the architecture, the low light, the Los Alamos exhibit, and the fact that everyone had suits on, this place was among the more foreboding places we’d visited in the nations’ Capitol. In the end we were treated nicely by reception, and allowed to place several calls within the building from a beige courtesy phone, which we couldn’t help notice was sitting next to an ominous red phone–who picks up on the other end of that thing? After a barrage of dead ends it was clear the closest we would get to Secretary Chu was his portrait in the lobby.

After dozens of fruitless attempts to contact someone, anyone, who could get us in the door, we finally resorted to simply walking up to the White House and ringing the doorbell. Well, it’s not a doorbell in the normal sense.

After dozens of fruitless attempts to contact someone, anyone, who could get us in the door, we finally resorted to simply walking up to the White House and ringing the doorbell. Well, it’s not a doorbell in the normal sense. Sure, the button thing you push is almost exactly like a normal doorbell, but instead of a door, it’s mounted to a heavily-guarded iron gate. And instead of sending a melodic chime into the home of a friend or neighbor, it sends a silent signal into a glass Secret Service booth. But it doesn’t take long before that silence is shattered, as me and Brian soon found out. Not long after we pushed the button, we found ourselves on the business end of a frighteningly authoritative “Can I help you?,” blasted from a bullhorn atop the booth itself. We nervously explained that we had an electric motorcycle for the President, and were told to stay where we were. After what seemed like an eternity, a stone-faced Secret Service officer emerged from the booth and strode toward us. This was it. Prison. Waterboarding. Sensory deprivation. But when the officer extended his hand, it wasn’t holding a taser; instead he gave us a phone number to call, and said someone would be right out. And moments later, to our disbelief, we were greeted outside the gates by an actual White House attache, a friendly young woman in a gray business suit who thanked us for our offer, and immediately returned us to the bureaucratic vortex by suggesting we call the White House Press Office and ask THEM if they could help us. Hey, at this point we were so relieved not to be in Guantanamo Bay that we actually felt blessed by the magnanimity of the gesture. Anyway, it all proved to be another dead end, but we’re not beaten yet.

We just needed to get the bikes in front of the right people, and now that we’d stumbled into this group of strolling Cabinet members, a meeting with Obama was a foregone conclusion. As I watched Brian work his magic on these smartly-dressed heavy hitters, I noticed the guy nearest to me had the most demolished shoes I’d ever seen. Black sneakers of an indeterminate brand, creased beyond recognition and covered with what appeared to be potting soil. As it turned out, they were groundskeepers. I didn’t have the heart to stop Brian. He was in the middle of his pitch, and he was on a roll. Anyway, his hopes would be dashed soon enough. Better to let him live in the moment, and continue to dream.

We’ve ridden through big cities and small towns, past lakes and over
mechanically trouble free. But as excited as we are to have covered the
distance, and show what EVs are capable of, this trip has never been about
changing zip codes. It’s about changing perceptions. It’s about proving that
the real America isn’t broken corporations dumping billions into a doomed
enterprise. The real America is the same thing it’s been since the nation
declared independence. Smart, resourceful and determined. The bikes we have
are two-wheeled proof. And we haven’t really gotten anywhere until we can
hand that proof to someone who matters. Someone like Barack Obama. So yes,
we’ve ridden a long way, but now that we’re here, the real journey begins.

For the most part we got answering machines, but we did speak with an officer of some sort on the Department of Energy’s emergency hotline. We thought we had called a number for urgent business, but it sounded more of a number for urgent situations, like a nuclear reactor melting down. Anyway, the officer was actually helpful and even tried to transfer us to the right extensions, but he too got answering machines. At least there was one guy working.

Our next stop was Silver Springs, Maryland, just outside DC. It was hard to believe we were so close to the Capitol, and we kept peeking at the top of the trees, expecting to see the Washington monument poking out. But our destination tonight was not the White House. It was a restaurant called Fajita Coast, where we were invited to a dinner being hosted by the Electric Vehicle Association, a Washington EV club. The fact that electric vehicle clubs exist in the first place is testimony to how far EVs need to come. It means they’re still niche. When something becomes ubiquitous there’s no longer any reason for a club. The entire world is the club. This is why there is no Cordless Telephone Association of Greater Miami, or Knights of the Crewneck Sweater. And while EVs may not be everywhere yet, they will be soon. Anytime you can get something at a Best Buy, ubiquity is on the way. So it’s conceivable that one day there will be no Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington, D.C. But we have to admit that for now, we’re damn glad there is. For one thing, it’s run by two of the best guys you’ll ever meet, President Dave Goldstein and Vice President Charlie Garlow, proponents of EVs long before they became chic. For another, as we witnessed over dinner, the club is a catalyst for the exchange of EV ideas, an open-source skunk works where members compare notes on the latest vehicles they’ve built or modifications they’ve made. And of course the club is constantly working to increase awareness of EVs and help pave the way for their adoption by society en masse. Charlie picked up the entire tab for dinner, and afterward we followed him to his home, where he let Brian and I crash in the basement. Charlie rocks. Unless you generate excessive air pollution, in which case he’s your worst nightmare–by day Charlie is an attorney for the Environmental Protection Agency, Air Enforcement Division. Anyway, as our heads hit the pillow we were filled with excitement, and more than a little uncertainty. With the Capitol shut down over the weekend, we’d be relegated to working whatever contacts we could for the next couple days, and strategizing for Monday and Tuesday. What if we can’t get a bike to Barack? What if we can? What if…

We are no one. But George Washington was someone. So what if, on our way through Winchester, PA, we stopped at George Washington’s old office and tried to call Obama from there. Surely the Whitehouse has caller ID, and one can imagine a call from George Washington might carry serious weight. Yes, there are some obvious flaws in the logic. For instance, neither Brian nor myself can do a colonial accent. Plus if they quizzed us, like, “Which foot did you have propped up on the gunwale of the boat when you were crossing the Potomac?,” we would’ve had to go on Google Images to see that it was the right foot, and the ensuing pause would surely tip them off. Anyway, we thought it would be fun, but the person who worked at the tiny facility didn’t think it would be fun at all, so the plan never really got off the ground.

Many people who’ve reached out and offered us electricity through the website are into things like alternative energy and sustainability. It stands to reason that green types would want to help out a couple of guys on electric vehicles. So we were a little confused when we pulled into the Leesburg home of Chris Smith. There was no recycled birdhouse. No tumbling composter. No found-object wind chime. But there was a Porsche GT3 RS with a roll cage, smart wing and race slicks, a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 high performance SUV, a tricked-out WRX, and a custom yellow Snap-On tool chest bigger than most dwellings in Papua New Guinea. Could this be the right address? Turns out it was, and while Chris was no friend to electric vehicles, he wasn’t an enemy to them either. The fact is he’s a hell of a nice guy, but, like many ardent fans of internal combustion, he’s unwilling to compromise when it comes to performance. We could write pages and pages on why that’s an unreasonable position, but it won’t change the fact that many Americans feel exactly like Chris. And when they judge a vehicle, regardless of whether it’s powered by electricity or fossil fuel, their conclusion is based solely on that vehicle’s ability to propel them through space. Electric vehicles won’t supplant their gas-powered counterparts until they can achieve similar performance. But the good news is, they’re already getting closer. The fact that the bikes me and Brian are riding go 70mph makes them a heck of a lot more practical for someone whose commute has a few miles of interstate. And now that EVs are showing up at the races, increased performance will trickle down to the production models. As Chris himself admits, “If they make one that scares kids and old people I might buy it.” Well, we guarantee the BRAMMO Isle of Man bike would scare the bejeesus out of an octogenarian. And it’s not hard to envision that kind of performance making it’s way to a production platform. Better keep that Amex handy, Chris.

As we raced through the hills it was clear that electric vehicles have no problem with steep grades. I asked Brian about that (he’s smart), and he explained that as the load increases on an electric motor, the toque automatically increases right along with it. So unlike a conventional gas-powered vehicle, you don’t have to worry about what RPMs you’re at. The power is there all the time. And we were using it to turn the back roads of West Virginia into our own private rollercoaster. By the time we got to the tiny town of Paw Paw, we were due for a charge. We were turned down flat at a local bank (0-2 at Chinese restaurants, 0-1 at financial institutions), but in the end we received help from the unlikeliest of allies: a gas station. Not only did they grant us plug access, but since the only outlet they had was inside the store, they let us wheel the bikes through the front door and plug them in right next to the store’s ATM. It was weird to see two products getting help from the kind of place they were designed to eliminate. But then again, if gas stations were repurposed as café/recharging stations, they could outlive the product they built around.

We plugged the bikes into an exterior outlet and ventured inside, where our senses were immediately assailed by colonial architecture, gregorian chant, and fresh espresso. The door was guarded by a life-sized Roman soldier, but the interior was welcoming, as was the owner, Roger Clarke. Over the next few hours we came to learn that the building we were in was actually the home of Robert Philson, who incited the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, and was arrested and later pardoned by George Washington.
Philson went on to become a US Congressman, and served as a General in the war of 1812. As we sat around the fire, sipping coffee and learning about the history of Berlin, we began feeling a little like conspirators ourselves, sowing the seeds of a rebellion against the powers-that-be in American transportation. We like to think General Philson would approve.

To avoid precisely this kind of podiatric disaster, Brian and I have gone to great lengths to keep our feet happy, swapping from sneakers to boots in the cold, and even resorting to gortex boot covers in the rain. But approaching the small town of Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, we were running dangerously low on clean socks, so when we saw the sign for Tonya’s Laundry Corner, we quickly turned off. Owner Tonya Booher let us pull the bikes inside and plug them in next to a row of washing machines, which we immediately filled with socks and various other articles of clothing. And as we filled the machines with quarters we soon realized, our bikes were gonna get us all the way to DC for less than it cost to do two loads of laundry.

1500 people lost their jobs here in July as faith in US-made vehicles evaporated, eliminating demand for the steel this town once produced. The idea that our trip could somehow help this town felt naïve, if not outright delusional. And if our visit here served any purpose, it was maybe to remind us how far we have to go. The economy is in shambles and the planet is in peril. At best, EVs are a perceptible first step.

It’s safe to say that before this trip Brian and I would have found the term “couchsurfing” abhorrent. The idea of turning someone else’s sectional sofa into makeshift living quarters seemed a little invasive to both of us. Then there’s the fact that people’s homes seem to have their own unique olfactory signature. Not a bad smell, just a “them” smell. A constant reminder that you’re on foreign ground. Is it OK to set a glass down on the antique end table? Is it weird to ask for a coaster? What about the TV? No way YOU get to control the remote, so what do you end up watching? What if your host are about The View? Fortunately as we’ve couchsurfed during the trip, we’ve come to realize that couchsurfing isn’t anything like we thought it was. It’s being welcomed into someone’s home, and it’s more about getting acquainted than watching TV. Last night we stayed in the home of three guys who grew up together in Pittsburgh, Joe Kennedy, Eddie Mattock, and Mark Stunza. We spent the better part of the evening drowning out the Phillies/Dodgers game with animated conversation and intermittent bursts of laughter. And after sinking into the cozy confines of a pull-out couch and leather conversation pit, we were asleep in minutes. In the morning we said our goodbyes and Mike threw a longing look at the BRAMMOs before heading to work on a 70s-era scooter, and we went our separate ways, richer for the experience.

Southside Iron Works is an old school Pittsburgh gym that’s been in business 25 years. But EVs are no longer a green issue. They’re a common sense issue. So maybe it should come as no surprise that Richard Newman, who mans the front desk at Southside, was brimming over with ideas for EVs, including a great suggestion that places like progressive companies like Starbucks could install card-scanning recharge stations to attract EV owners, who would in turn would have a great place to hang out while their vehicles drew current.

So when Ken Zeff and Adrienne Zangrille, owners of Crazy Mocha, offered to hook us up with both forms of fuel, we were we all over it. With 25 locations, Crazy Mocha is Pittsburgh’s answer to Starbucks, only instead of all the stores looking the same, each has it’s own distinct vibe. With 5 schools nearby, including Pitt, Duquesne and Carnegie Melon, the flagship Shadyside location was packed with students on laptops, as well as professional types getting ready for the workday. These are the kind of people for whom an EV makes the most sense, and it was easy to picture the sidewalk outside Crazy Mocha packed with electric motorcycles. With any luck, one day it will be. But for now there were just two. The bikes drew the interest of students and professionals alike, as well as one police officer, who was kind enough to inform us of the city’s stance on sidewalk parking. After gathering signatures from several Crazy Mocha patrons, we saddled up and took off, narrowly avoiding a trip to the impound lot.

So it was particularly gratifying to share our work with some design students before we left Pittsburgh. As usual we showed up with little to no prior notice, so with the school’s design studio full of students and projects, we were relegated to a dumpster-laden back alley behind the department’s main building. But the humble setting only amplified the excited buzz as the students filed out and surrounded the bikes. As Brian and the students exchanged design insights, I sat back and enjoyed the whole scene with CMU’s Eric Anderson, who in addition to teaching at the School of Design is also President of the Industrial Designer’s Society of America. Eric told me the IDSA had touched on conventional motorcycle design during a 2004 symposium, and seemed excited by the the prospect of exploring motorcycle design through the lens of electricity now. Before we left the students signed our bikes, and as we headed into the hills around Pittsburgh there was a palpable sense of momentum building. Or maybe
it was just the abrupt emotional high that precedes a travel-induced psychiatric breakdown. Hard to say, really.

Can we make it to DC? Can we really give a bike to Obama? From the outset we’ve asked ourselves those questions. But those aren’t the real questions, the big questions, the questions to which even an imagined “yes” generates goose bumps. Can Americans innovate? Can we create jobs? Can people go from A to B without harming the earth? These are the questions that matter, the real questions behind our trip. Can people go from A to B without harming the earth? These are the questions that matter, the real questions behind our trip. And since we are optimists, we decided to answer them in advance. Definitively. In custom paint. So we rode to Swewickey PA, just outside Pittsburgh, and met with Jeremy Seanor, owner of Lucky Strike pinstriping. Rolling the bikes into the shop we immediately realized they would be in good vehicular company–on the left, a 1959 Corvette convertible, on the right, a Plymouth GTX, and dead ahead, an AMC Javelin. Jeremy laid down some of the cleanest lines we’d ever seen from a paintbrush, and it was cool to see such a traditional craft applied to so modern a form. But the best part by far was riding away from the shop, looking down and seeing “yes we can,” and dreaming about what the world will be like if EVs succeed.

We rolled into Pittsburgh in the general vicinity of Heinz Field, where a Steelers game was clearly about to start since the place was a sea of black and gold. In a parking lot adjacent to the field there was a wild tailgate session in progress, a miniature city of custom RVs crawling with crazed Steelers fans. We rode into the lot on a pedestrian-only walking path, bypassing the guard at the lot’s chained-off main entrance, and asked the first RV owner we came upon, Thomas Newcome, if it was OK to plug into his generator. Not only did he let us draw a little current, but he fed us sub sandwiches and some of the most amazing clam chowder we’d ever had. After watching the first few plays of the game on his TV, we walked toward the stadium and scored tickets from a scalper (they practically give them away once the game has started.) Next thing you know me and Brian are high-fiving Pittsburgh fans as the Steelers take it to archrival Cleveland. People were curious because we had to carry our helmets in with us (as one guy put it, “what are you guys, f’ing skydivers?”), so we ended up talking lots about our trip between plays. And we turned a lot of heads as we whirred effortlessly through the inevitable post-game traffic jam. The whole thing was incredible, and the old cliché, “you could never script this stuff,” has never been more applicable.

On our way to Pittsburgh we stopped to pay our respects to a friend we’d both grown up with. A friend we met the first time we were buckled into the back seat of our mother’s cars, and really got to know on our 15th birthdays. Our friend lived a long amazing life, and thoroughly enriched our own lives along the way. But his time has come, and the world is moving on.

A few days back we learned the constitution forbid elected officials from accepting gifts. But today, @sefba, a helpful follower and astute observer of governmental type stuff, informed us that the President and Vice President are exempted from this strident no-gift policy. Even better, since Brian/BRAMMO are American, there is no limitation on gift value (the prez and vice prez can accept gifts from foreign citizens, but the value can’t exceed $250). Check out link: http://www.slate.com/id/1001949/ Thank you @sefba!

Proprietor William Myers let us roll our bikes directly inside the bar’s billiard area. We plugged into a wall socket also powering a video poker machine, it occurred to us that never before had two more different devices drawn current from the same place. And the same dynamic was developing with regard to Brian and I, and the people inside Harry’s. These were blue-collar Americans. People whose fortunes rise and fall with the fate of American manufacturing. Patriotic, hardworking and protective of their own. What would they think of a couple out-of-towners riding green technology through their neck of the woods? At first they were curious and even a little amused, but the second they found out the bikes were made in Ashland, Oregon, in the USA, their benign mirth turned to unbridled enthusiasm. One guy even wanted to open his own dealership. Blue and green get along just fine at Harry’s Place.

With the socioeconomic structure of America built around automobiles that run on fossil fuel, our frigid ride through the rain would be for nothing. That was our mindset as we limped into Sebring, Ohio on the last of our electricity.

Video of cop escorting When a CPD motorcycle cop pulled up and suspiciously
eyed the bikes, we were half expecting to be taken into custody. After an
awkward moment, I said “You’re looking at these like, ‘What the hell are
turned out to be a super-friendly and funny guy, and he had all kinds of
questions about the bike. Once his curiosity was satisfied, he offered Brian
a short clinic in police formation riding. The two of them did their best
Ponch and John imitation up and down the street, and based on Brian’s
performance we’re fairly certain he is now authorized to issue citations.

We tried to appeal to them with humor, making the case to a security guard that “these things rock, and clearly they roll, so it seems like we’ve met both criteria.” But his response was, “We don’t have that kind of humor here.” We would love to show you the video. It’s absolutely hilarious. But they asked that we not share it with anyone. Who knows, maybe they were just having a bad day. We won’t hold it against them. There’s a little tax attorney in us all.

Science Center Vice President Blake Andres was one of the coolest people we’ve met in our entire lives, and his museum rocks significantly harder than its stressed-out neighbor. Not only did Blake let us plug in at an outdoor outlet adjacent to the center’s decorative pond, but he even brought over a couple of stone slabs so our kickstands wouldn’t sink into the mulch. The Center itself is filled with fun interactive exhibits, and best of all, there’s a giant wind turbine right there on the front lawn, meaning our bikes were a lot closer to “emissions free” for the upcoming leg of our journey. The truth is most of the electricity we use is generated by coal fire, and while EVs are a firmly-planted foot in the right direction, they can’t be considered emissions-free until the grid is too.

Even better, the faculty let us ride them through the halls on our way out, and it was fun to see students and professors poking their heads out of classrooms and offices with quizzical smiles on their faces. It’s an experience only possible on an electric motorcycle. Imagine if we had been on conventional bikes? People would have climbed under their desks. But EVs are interwoven with whatever landscape they negotiate. They’re quiet and inviting and part of what’s going on rather than being at odds with the world. Once we got outside, Douglas Paige showed up on his own motorcycle and led us on a quick ride through downtown.

Our first declined request to charge-up took place at a Chinese restaurant in Fremont, Ohio. So when we pulled into our second Chinese restaurant in Lorain, OH, we were certain, based on the law of averages, that we’d get the green light. Unfortunately it was strike 2. Though the proprietor of this subtly decorated establishment seemed fine with the concept of us recharging, he claimed the plug attached to the front of his restaurant did not fall under his jurisdiction, and sent us to the manager of the fried chicken joint one door down. Luckily she said it was cool to plug in, and after a top-off charge and some banter with interested townsfolk, we were back on the road.

That’s right, I said “Toledo energy scene.” Hard to believe, but this town, once known at the auto glass capitol of earth, has transitioned beautifully to the new green economy, and is now a leader in the development of solar power. Great town with great people, and a hotbed of grassroots innovation.

these are rays of hope.

A plug for a plug. Zingerman’s was our first charging spot and will
always own a special place in our minds and in this journey. Is it just
us or does Zingerman’s look like a place that has been suddenly thrust
into the 21st century with that Brammo powercycle out front. The best of
the old school meets the best of the new school. Thanks again. Where to
